Inside the Barrel with Maker’s Mark Master Distiller Blake Layfield

Inside the Barrel with Blake Layfield of Maker's Mark

with Andrew Wiehebrink, Director of Spirit Research and Innovation

Recognition often arrives years after the most important decisions are made. For Maker’s Mark Cellar Aged (2025 Release), their No. 3 placement on Whisky Advocate’s Most Exciting Whiskies of the Year for 2025 reflects a maturation approach built patiently over time.

Cellar Aged has never carried an age statement, yet since its debut in 2023 it has consistently featured bourbons aged 11 years or more. The 2025 release, a blend of 11, 13, and 14-year-old bourbons, demonstrates how thoughtful aging strategy and blending discipline can create depth, complexity, and balance over time.

We sat down with Maker's Mark Master Distiller, Blake Layfield, to learn more about their craft and where you can find this special release.

In the coming months, we will highlight stories from across our customer community and share distiller perspectives on what it takes to create award-winning spirits.
